Summary
A firm managing alternative investments has always been able to comply with the Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS). But because the GIPS standards do not include dedicated guidance to such investments, there has been a perception that compliance was not possible. In order to provide clarity on this issue, the GIPS Executive Committee has created the Guidance Statement on Alternative Investment Strategies and Structures and issued an exposure draft (PDF) for public comment that details how firms managing alternative strategies and portfolio structures can apply the GIPS standards. The guidance statement specifically addresses such critical issues as estimated versus final values, the treatment of side pockets, the treatment of fees and expenses, and master-feeder structures.
